Facial Aesthetics

      What it involves?

  • You will need to first meet with the doctor who will prescribe the medicine. This should always be a face-to-face meeting.

  • The doctor will want to fully understand your medical history and reasons for wanting the treatment before they go ahead.

  • The person who prescribed the medicine might administer it, or they might delegate this task to another person.

  • Local anesthetic is not usually needed. Your skin is cleaned and small amounts of botulinum toxin are injected into the muscles of the face to be treated.

  • Several injections are usually needed at different sites. It takes about 10 minutes. The injections may be a little painful. Most people tolerate the discomfort well.

      What happens afterwards?

  • You won't see any difference straight away. It takes about 3 to 5 days before the injections take effect, and up to 2 weeks for the full effect to be seen.

  • Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated areas for up to three days.

  • The effects generally last for about 4 to 6 months. If you want to maintain the effect, you will need regular follow-up injections.

      What are the limitations?

  • Whilst these injections can be very effective in reducing wrinkles due to muscle contractions, it has no effect in reducing the fine lines on the face caused by sun damage, and lines due to sagging of facial skin.

  • In those patients with very heavy lines, repeated treatments may be needed for maximum effect.

  • Too frequent or excessive dosing of these injections may lead to patient's resistance to treatment due to antibody formation and further treatment may exaggerate any facial asymmetry.

Am I suitable for this treatment?

Your doctor will take a detailed medical history    and an assessment of your needs and expectations to ensure this is an appropriate treatment for you.

Except in exceptional circumstances, this is not a treatment recommended for those under 25 or over 65.

  • Botulinum toxin cannot be given to pregnant or breast feeding women since the effects on the baby are not known.

  • Not suitable for patients with certain neurological disorders.

  • Not suitable if you are currently taking certain medicines.

  • If you have previously experienced any adverse reactions to any Botulinum Toxin treatments.

      Any Risks involved?

  • No severe complications after cosmetic use of these injections have been reported in the literature.

  • Very rarely excessive weakening of the target muscles and paresis/partial paralysis of adjacent muscles can occur, resulting in facial weakness. This is self-limiting.

  • When injecting above the eyebrows, upper eyelid ptosis or slight drooping may occur but only 1:100. This can be corrected with eye drops but will also improve as the effects of the injection wears off.

What to do if you have any problems?

  • If you have had anti wrinkle injections and are not happy with the results or are experiencing problems, take up the matter with your doctor.

  • If there are any complications that require medical attention, it is best that you go back to the practitioner who treated you.

  • If this is not possible, you can go to your GP or local accident and emergency (A&E) department.

  • You can also report any side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme website. By reporting side effects, you are helping to provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
